Virgo – Puttin’ the “GO” in GO-GETTER and GOGO Boots

Virgo, the mutable earth sign, ruled by Mercury – placid on the outside, frantic in the mellon.  If you were born between August 22 and September 23, you are a Virgo and probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

Virgos get a bad rap as a nitpicky-perfectionistic prudes, but that is WAY too simplistic.  What they are is discerning.  Their quicksilver mercurial minds are always working, always analyzing, and instantly examining, compartmentalizing, saving or discarding all the data that comes their way.  They are very comfortable in the world of the mind and very particular about who they share their emotions and body with, because they always feel vulnerable and don’t have that strong of an outer armor to protect them other than their keen mind and the choices they make.  No matter what kind of crap happens to them, they do not seem to grow a tough exterior, even if they do become a little cynical.

They are loyal and devoted friends and romantic partners and will really “let their hair down” with the person they love.  They are emotionally available almost immediately with the person that they feel they can trust.

The “Virgin” as their symbol isn’t so much a prissy nun but much like the goddess Artemis as being the archetype of someone independent and self-sufficient (as well as a total natural with animals, Virgos are total animal whisperers).  For men, it would be The Hermit of tarot card Major Arcana fame.  They like a romantic companion, but don’t NEED one, and this might make them appear aloof, cold, or prudish, but trust me, it’s not true.  Yes, they might be living a lot in their minds, but they ARE an Earth sign and Earth signs are tactile and sensual.  They like to exercise and use their bodies, they have a deep connection to the physical despite relying so much on their logic.  They would be the stereotypical go-go dancer/Chippendale’s guy putting herself/himself through Med School.  Or personal trainer.  Really, any physical work is just as fun to a Virgo as a nerdy research desk job.  They don’t see themselves as “above” any kind of work and sometimes physical work makes them worn out enough to actually shut their brain up and fall asleep at night.  DIY projects are a big appeal to Virgos for that reason.

Virgos are a phenomenal blend of great ideas and hard work — they have their lazy streaks, but even when they’re lazy they’re reading up on things that interest them or doing some kind of craft with their hands.  Where Aquarius wants to change the world through policy, Virgos like to make a difference at the ground level.  Check any Habitat for Humanity teams and there’s bound to be a healthy amount of Virgos with hammers in their hands.

Our friend the Virgo is curious and interested in a great many things but unlike Gemini, they are more likely to commit to doing more than just reading about what they’re interested in, they like to actually apply their knowledge, but only after analyzing the pros and cons of getting involved.  Virgos like to have all the information before making a decision, which can paralyze them sometimes since they hate making mistakes and hate being forced to decide to do something blind.  Virgos have the reputation of being critical but that critical eye is way more often turned towards themselves than outward, which is why making mistakes feels like a failure rather than a lesson learned.  They can be very unfair with themselves.

Virgos aren’t all OCD neat freaks, though — yes a calm environment outside can cause calm within, but there are many Virgos who value an organized mind rather than their external surroundings and can end up on Hoarders if they’re not careful.

Virgos like to be in charge, but not for the glory, they like to be in charge to be sure things are done RIGHT.  Virgos are intensely practical and usually do know a better way to do things or handle things.  Trust them if they say they have a better way, they really do.

Nervous energy is a problem for Virgo along with workaholism.  Quieting their minds is so important and a lot of their stress will show up physically with bad digestive disorders or insomnia.

Virgos would find meditation appealing because it’s practical and peaceful and a great way for them to learn how to let go of all the “busyness”.

Natural rulers of the 6th House, Virgos tend to be drawn to things having to do with plants, animals and health.  Green thumbs abound among the Virgos.  Virgos make excellent intuitive and energy healers, especially after working on themselves for a while.  If poorly aspected, Virgo can be a major hypochondriac and should stay far away from Web M.D. when not feeling well.

Virgo’s traditional birthstones are Peridot for August and Sapphire for September, which would enhance their energies along with Carnelian, Green Tourmaline, Moss Agate, Citrine, Dumortierite, and Sodalite:

Good balancing stones for Virgo would be Amethyst, Lepidolite (great for soothing over-active minds) Blue Lace Agate, Rainbow Moonstone, Garnet, Bloodstone, Aragonite (helps with an overly critical attitude) and Rose Quartz (for self-love and self-forgiveness)

While Virgo is an Earth sign they still need grounding, especially since they are ruled by Mercury and very likely to have a lot of anxiety:

Virgos can get very irritable because they take on a lot of responsibility and sometimes feel the weight of the world on their shoulders, a great stone to help with irritability is Pink Calcite:

Pink Calcite can help with forging a deeper connection between the upper chakras and the heart chakra, a pathway between the mind and emotion for more balance.

Pink Calcite is also a “releasing” stone that can release blocked emotions and stagnant energies allowing Virgo to move forward out paralysis into taking action (which they love to do!)

When held, Pink Calcite is very calming, and who couldn’t use that? Not just Virgos, but all of us.
